Developing The Canter

The canter is one of the most revealing gaits — it shows you where balance, strength, connection, and confidence are missing. This four-week transformation programme is designed to help you and your horse build a canter that feels powerful, adjustable, and in sync. Across the month, we break the process into clear, achievable stages: in Week 1, we focus on how you enter the canter — preparing the body, timing the transition, and creating lift rather than rush. In Week 2, we build balance, using targeted exercises to help your horse carry weight behind and stay loose through the ribcage. Week 3 is about straightness — developing alignment so the energy flows forward instead of leaking out sideways. And in Week 4, we bring it all together, working on maintaining the canter with rhythm, connection, and adjustability.

With one focused exercise each day and a complete session plan at the end of every week, this programme guides you step-by-step through the process. Whether your goal is a more rideable, expressive canter for flatwork, greater balance for jumping, or a stronger foundation for collection and lateral work, these progressive sessions will help you transform how the gait feels — and how confidently you and your horse can use it.
